New Medicare Cards are coming in 2018.

As part of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015 and to help protect your identity, Medicare is mailing new Medicare cards starting April 2018. The new cards will no longer have your Social Security number on them. The new cards will be issued between April 2018 and April 2019. Your new card will have a new Medicare Number that’s unique to you, instead of your Social Security Number.

Here’s what you need to know about your new Medicare card:
• You don’t have to do anything to get your new Medicare card
• The new card won’t change your Medicare coverage or benefits
• Medicare won’t call you and ask for private information to get your new Medicare Number or card
• There’s no charge for your new card
Watch out for scams

Medicare will never ask you to give your personal or private information to get your new card. There are scam artists that may try to get your personal information (like your current Medicare Number) by contacting you about your new card. If someone asks you for your information, for money, or threatens to cancel your health benefits hang up and call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

In addition, if you should need a new Medicare card at any time because it’s lost, stolen or damaged. You can always call Social Security and request a new one. The new card will take about 30 days to arrive. If you need proof sooner than 30 days, you can request a letter from Social Security. The letter will arrive in about 10 days. If you need proof immediately, you can visit your local Social Security office.
