If you’re asking, “Is Medicare Plan N Better Than Plan G?”, you’re asking one of the smartest Medicare questions there is.

After helping Medicare beneficiaries since 1985, I’ve found that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. In fact, although Plan G gets most of the attention online, approximately 90% of my Medicare Supplement applications are for Plan N.

That doesn’t mean Plan N is always better.

It means it’s often worth considering.

What’s the Difference Between Plan N and Plan G?

Both Plan G and Plan N work alongside Original Medicare.

Both generally allow you to see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare.

The biggest differences involve cost-sharing.

Plan G typically covers Medicare-approved expenses after you satisfy the Medicare Part B deductible.

Plan N generally offers lower premiums, but you may be responsible for:

• Certain office visit copays
• Emergency room copays in some situations
• Medicare Part B excess charges (if applicable)

For many people, the premium savings outweigh the occasional copay.

Why Do So Many People Choose Plan N?

Many of my clients choose Plan N because they prefer paying a lower monthly premium.

Plan N may appeal to people who:

• Don’t visit the doctor frequently
• Want to reduce their monthly costs
• Are comfortable with occasional copays
• Prefer a balance between coverage and affordability

I’ve found that many Medicare beneficiaries appreciate the value Plan N provides.

When Might Plan G Be a Better Choice?

Plan G may be a better fit if you:

• Visit doctors frequently
• Prefer having fewer out-of-pocket costs
• Value simplicity and predictability
• Are willing to pay a higher premium

For some people, the peace of mind is worth the additional cost.

Which Plan Do I Recommend?

The answer depends on you.

I’ve recommended both plans for decades.

However, I think it’s important to know that despite all the online attention Plan G receives, a large percentage of my clients ultimately choose Plan N.

That’s because many people find that Plan N strikes an excellent balance between premium savings and comprehensive coverage.

The goal isn’t to push one plan over another.

The goal is helping you choose the plan that’s right for your situation.
