If you’re looking for a Medicare Broker in Cape May NJ, you probably want experienced, independent help comparing your coverage—not another sales presentation from one insurance company.
Whether you live in Cape May year-round, own a seasonal home, divide your time between different states, or plan to move here after retirement, your Medicare coverage should fit the way you actually live and receive healthcare.
I’m Joe DeAngelis of The DeAngelis Agency. I’ve been helping Medicare beneficiaries since 1985 and specialize in comparing Medicare Supplement plans from multiple insurance companies. I’ll explain your options plainly, help you compare current rates and remain available after you enroll.

Medicare Supplement Plans in Cape May NJ
Many Cape May residents choose Medicare Supplement insurance because they want predictable healthcare expenses and the freedom to receive Medicare-covered care throughout the country.
A Medicare Supplement plan, also called Medigap, works alongside Original Medicare. Medicare pays its share of an approved claim first, and the Medicare Supplement policy then pays according to the benefits included in the selected plan.
Standardized Medicare Supplement plans generally do not use proprietary doctor networks. You can receive covered care from any doctor or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare.
That nationwide access can be especially valuable if you:
- Divide your time between Cape May and another state
- Travel frequently after retirement
- Use specialists outside Cape May County
- Receive some healthcare in Pennsylvania or another part of New Jersey
- Want coverage that is not tied to a local Medicare Advantage network
The medical benefits of each standardized plan letter are the same regardless of the insurance company. For example, every standard Plan G provides the same standardized medical benefits. Companies can still charge very different premiums and offer different household discounts.
Plan G and Plan N for Cape May Residents
Plan G and Plan N are the two Medicare Supplement plans I recommend most frequently. Both provide strong protection from many of the expenses left by Original Medicare, but they handle premiums and out-of-pocket costs differently.
Medicare Supplement Plan G
Plan G generally provides highly predictable coverage.
After you pay the annual Medicare Part B deductible, Plan G generally covers the remaining Medicare-approved coinsurance and copayments included in the standardized plan. It also covers qualifying Medicare Part B excess charges.
Plan G may be the better fit when:
- You prefer highly predictable healthcare expenses
- You do not want Plan N’s office or emergency-room copayments
- You regularly receive care outside New Jersey
- The premium difference between Plan G and Plan N is relatively small
- You are comfortable paying more each month for fewer medical bills
Medicare Supplement Plan N
Plan N frequently has a lower monthly premium than Plan G while providing the same major standardized hospital benefits.
With Plan N, you remain responsible for:
- The annual Medicare Part B deductible
- Copayments of up to $20 for some office visits
- A copayment of up to $50 for an emergency-room visit that does not result in inpatient admission
- Medicare Part B excess charges when they legally apply
The emergency-room copayment does not apply when the visit results in an inpatient hospital admission.
Plan N may provide better value when:
- Its annual premium savings substantially exceed your likely copayments
- You are comfortable paying occasional small medical bills
- You want to reduce your monthly premium
- You confirm that your regular providers accept Medicare assignment
- You want strong coverage for major Medicare-approved expenses
Plan N is not only for people who rarely visit a doctor. Someone who receives regular medical care may still save money when Plan N’s premium is significantly lower than Plan G’s premium.
The proper comparison uses your actual Cape May ZIP code, age, application information, available discounts and current rates. For a detailed comparison, see Plan G vs Plan N.
Medicare Part B Excess Charges in New Jersey
New Jersey does not prohibit Medicare Part B excess charges. This makes the excess-charge difference between Plan G and Plan N more relevant for Cape May residents.
An excess charge can occur when a healthcare provider accepts Medicare patients but does not accept Medicare assignment for a covered service. In many cases, a non-participating provider may charge up to 15% above Medicare’s approved amount, known as the limiting charge.
Plan G covers qualifying Part B excess charges. Plan N does not.
Most providers accept Medicare assignment, but Plan N members should confirm before receiving non-emergency care. Ask the provider:
- Do you accept Medicare?
- Do you accept Medicare assignment?
- Will I be charged more than the Medicare-approved amount?
- Have you opted out of Medicare?
A provider who has opted out of Medicare is different from a non-participating Medicare provider. An opt-out provider may use a private contract with the patient. Plan G’s excess-charge benefit does not cover unlimited private-contract charges for services that Medicare does not cover.
Seasonal Residents and People With More Than One Home
Cape May includes year-round residents, seasonal homeowners and people who plan to make the Shore their permanent home after retirement.
Your permanent residential address matters when comparing Medicare coverage. It may affect:
- Medicare Supplement premiums
- Available household discounts
- Medicare Advantage plan availability
- Part D prescription drug plan availability
- Provider networks and service areas
- Insurance-company application requirements
A seasonal address generally should not be used simply to obtain a different plan or premium. Your application should accurately reflect your permanent residence.
If you spend part of the year in Florida, Pennsylvania or another state, consider where you expect to receive routine and specialized medical care. Medicare Supplement coverage generally provides broader nationwide access because it works with any provider who accepts Medicare.
Medicare Advantage plans may offer out-of-network benefits, but the rules and costs depend on the specific plan. Never assume a Cape May Medicare Advantage plan will provide the same access when you are living somewhere else.
Medicare Supplement vs Medicare Advantage in Cape May
Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans work very differently.
Medicare Supplement Coverage
A Medicare Supplement plan works with Original Medicare. Depending on the plan letter selected, it can help pay deductibles, coinsurance and copayments left by Medicare.
Important characteristics include:
- Nationwide access to providers who accept Medicare
- No proprietary Medicare Supplement provider network
- No referrals required by the Supplement policy
- A separate monthly premium
- A separate Part D plan generally needed for outpatient prescriptions
- More predictable Medicare-approved medical expenses
Medicare Advantage Coverage
A Medicare Advantage plan replaces Original Medicare as the way you receive your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance company.
Important considerations include:
- Provider networks
- Plan service areas
- Copayments and coinsurance
- Prior-authorization requirements
- An annual out-of-pocket maximum for covered medical services
- Prescription coverage often included
- Possible dental, vision, hearing or fitness benefits
A Medicare Advantage plan may fit some people well, but Cape May residents who travel or maintain another home should examine provider access carefully.
The lowest monthly premium does not automatically create the lowest total healthcare cost. Compare premiums, expected medical expenses, doctor access, travel needs and the plan’s annual out-of-pocket limit before enrolling.

Moving to Cape May After Retirement
Moving to Cape May can affect Medicare Advantage, Part D and Medicare Supplement coverage differently.
If you already have Original Medicare with a standard Medicare Supplement policy, you can generally keep the policy when moving within the United States. However, your premium may change because insurance companies can use location as a pricing factor.
You can apply for a different Medicare Supplement company, but the company may require medical underwriting unless you are within your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or qualify for a guaranteed-issue right.
A move may create a Special Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage or Part D when you move outside your current plan’s service area or become eligible for different plans. The specific options and deadlines depend on your circumstances.
Do not cancel existing coverage until the replacement coverage is approved and you have confirmed its premium and effective date.
Turning 65 or Leaving Employer Coverage in Cape May
Your Medicare enrollment timing is especially important when you are turning 65, retiring or leaving employer health insurance.
Your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins the first month you have Medicare Part B and are 65 or older. During this period, you can generally purchase any Medicare Supplement policy available to you without being declined because of your health.
This is a one-time enrollment opportunity. It does not repeat every year.
If you continue working after 65, your correct Medicare enrollment date depends on the type of employer coverage you have, the size of the employer, who is actively working and whether the coverage is considered creditable.
Before ending employer coverage, coordinate:
- The termination date of your employer plan
- Medicare Part A and Part B effective dates
- Your Medicare Supplement effective date
- Prescription drug coverage
- Coverage for a spouse or dependent
- Any Health Savings Account considerations
Starting early can help prevent coverage gaps, late-enrollment penalties and rushed decisions.
Can You Change Medicare Supplement Companies?
You can apply to change Medicare Supplement companies at any time of the year. There is no annual Medicare Supplement enrollment period required to submit an application.
However, the new insurance company may ask health questions and use medical underwriting. Approval is not guaranteed outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed-issue situation.
Because standardized benefits are the same for every company offering the same plan letter, changing companies may allow someone to keep identical standardized medical benefits at a different premium.
Before changing, compare:
- Current and future premiums
- Household discounts
- Financial strength
- Recent rate history
- Underwriting requirements
- Customer service
- Application or policy fees
Past rate history can provide useful context, but it cannot guarantee future increases. Sometimes the right recommendation is to keep your current coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I work with a Medicare broker in Cape May NJ?
An independent Medicare broker can compare plans from multiple insurance companies and explain important differences in premiums, standardized benefits, discounts and underwriting. You are not limited to receiving information from one insurance company.
Can you help if I live in Cape May only part of the year?
Yes. Your permanent residence and the locations where you receive healthcare should be considered when comparing coverage. Medicare Supplement plans generally provide nationwide access to providers who accept Medicare, while Medicare Advantage plans may use networks and service areas.
What is the difference between Plan G and Plan N?
Plan G generally has a higher premium but covers qualifying Medicare Part B excess charges and does not have Plan N’s office or emergency-room copayments. Plan N often has a lower premium but may require certain copayments and does not cover excess charges.
Are Medicare Part B excess charges allowed in New Jersey?
Yes. New Jersey does not prohibit Medicare Part B excess charges. A Plan N member should confirm whether a healthcare provider accepts Medicare assignment. Plan G covers qualifying excess charges when they apply.
Does The DeAngelis Agency charge a broker fee?
No. The DeAngelis Agency does not charge clients a separate fee for Medicare plan comparisons, enrollment assistance or ongoing policy service. Insurance companies generally compensate Medicare brokers directly.
Can I switch Medicare Supplement companies after moving to Cape May?
You can apply to another company, but medical underwriting may apply unless you are within your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or qualify for a guaranteed-issue right. Do not cancel your existing coverage until the new policy is approved.
Do I have to meet with you in person?
No. Medicare consultations and applications can generally be completed by telephone, text, email or video. This is convenient for both year-round and seasonal Cape May residents.
