Best Medicare Supplement Plan N Companies in Pennsylvania

Compare Medicare Supplement Plan N companies in Pennsylvania based on current premiums, financial strength, discounts, underwriting and overall value.

The best Medicare Supplement Plan N companies in Pennsylvania depend on the applicant—not a permanent statewide ranking. Age, ZIP code, gender, tobacco status, household discounts, underwriting eligibility and current rates can all affect which company provides the best value.

Companies frequently considered for Pennsylvania Plan N coverage include Chubb through Insurance Company of North America, Humana, Mutual of Omaha, HealthSpring, UnitedHealthcare through AARP, Highmark and Aetna-affiliated companies.

Each standard Plan N provides the same required medical benefits. The meaningful differences involve the premium, financial strength, discounts, underwriting, customer service and additional noninsurance programs.

Quick answer: There is no single best Plan N company for every Pennsylvania resident. The proper choice is the company offering the best combination of current premium, financial strength, underwriting eligibility and useful additional services for that particular applicant.

How Should Plan N Companies Be Compared?

A useful Plan N comparison should use the applicant’s actual information and evaluate every company using the same plan letter and requested effective date.

Current Premium

Rates change. A comparison should use premiums currently available for the applicant’s age and ZIP code.

Financial Strength

Financial-strength ratings can help evaluate an insurer’s ability to meet its financial obligations.

Discounts and Fees

Household discounts and policy fees can change the actual first-year and long-term cost.

Underwriting Eligibility

Outside protected enrollment periods, the lowest-priced company is not useful if it will not approve the applicant.

A company that offers the lowest premium today may move to a different position after its next rate adjustment. For that reason, this page does not place the companies in a fixed best-to-worst order.

Compare Current Pennsylvania Plan N Rates

The DeAngelis Agency can compare current Plan N premiums from multiple Medicare Supplement companies using your actual information.

What Does Medicare Supplement Plan N Cover?

Medicare Supplement Plan N helps pay many of the expenses left behind by Original Medicare.

Plan N generally covers:

  • Medicare Part A hospital coinsurance
  • Up to 365 additional hospital days after Medicare benefits are exhausted
  • The Medicare Part A hospital deductible
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Most Medicare Part B coinsurance
  • The first three pints of blood
  • Hospice coinsurance or copayments
  • Limited foreign-travel emergency expenses

Plan N does not cover the annual Medicare Part B deductible.

Plan N may also require a copayment of up to $20 for certain office visits and up to $50 for an emergency-room visit that does not result in an inpatient admission.

Plan N does not cover Medicare Part B excess charges. Pennsylvania prohibits Part B excess charges for Medicare-covered services received within the state. Excess charges may still matter when receiving care in another state where they are permitted.

Learn more on our Medicare Supplement Plan N page.

Does Every Plan N Company Provide the Same Benefits?

Yes. Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by plan letter.

Every standard Plan N must provide the same required Plan N medical benefits, regardless of the insurance company issuing the policy. A lower-priced Plan N does not provide less standardized medical coverage than a more expensive Plan N.

Insurance companies can differ in:

  • Monthly premiums
  • Household discounts
  • Policy or application fees
  • Financial strength
  • Rate history
  • Underwriting requirements
  • Customer and billing service
  • Fitness or wellness programs
  • Additional noninsurance services

Because the medical benefits are standardized, price deserves serious consideration. It should still be evaluated alongside the other company-specific differences.

Which Plan N Companies Should Pennsylvania Applicants Compare?

The companies available to an applicant can depend on the ZIP code, age and requested effective date. The following insurers and brands may warrant consideration when available.

Chubb Through INA

Medicare Supplement policies marketed under the Chubb name may be issued by Insurance Company of North America, commonly called INA.

INA holds an A++ financial-strength rating from AM Best with a stable outlook. Pennsylvania INA applications currently include a one-time $25 policy fee.

Chubb recently implemented a meaningful rate increase, so its current premium should be compared rather than relying on older rate rankings.

Humana

Humana may offer more than one Medicare Supplement product in Pennsylvania, including Humana Achieve and a standard Humana Medicare Supplement product.

The products provide the same standardized Plan N medical benefits when comparing Plan N with Plan N. Premiums, discounts and additional services may differ.

Certain standard Humana policies may include SilverSneakers, while Humana Achieve generally does not.

Mutual of Omaha

Mutual of Omaha and its affiliated insurance companies are established participants in the Medicare Supplement market.

The issuing company, current premium, household discount and underwriting guidelines should be confirmed for each Pennsylvania applicant.

HealthSpring

HealthSpring is the Medicare brand used for business formerly associated with Cigna Medicare.

HealthSpring Plan N may warrant consideration when its current premium, discounts and underwriting compare favorably for the applicant.

UnitedHealthcare Through AARP

UnitedHealthcare offers AARP-branded Medicare Supplement coverage to eligible applicants.

Applicants may value its familiar brand and member programs, but brand recognition does not guarantee the lowest Plan N premium.

Highmark Medigap Blue

Highmark has strong local name recognition in Pennsylvania and offers Medigap coverage when available.

Highmark’s premium and any optional wellness benefits should be compared with other Plan N companies rather than selecting it solely because of local familiarity.

Aetna-Affiliated Companies

Aetna-affiliated insurance companies may offer Medicare Supplement coverage in Pennsylvania.

The issuing company, current rate, household discount and underwriting requirements can affect whether an Aetna option provides suitable value.

Other Available Companies

Additional insurers may offer Plan N coverage depending on the applicant’s location and effective date.

A complete comparison should not automatically exclude a suitable company merely because it is less familiar to the applicant.

Is Chubb Currently the Best Plan N Company?

Chubb should not automatically be described as the best or lowest-priced Plan N company.

Chubb may still provide competitive value for certain applicants and offers strong financial strength through INA. However, its recent rate increase changed how it compares with other companies in Pennsylvania.

The appropriate approach is to compare Chubb’s current premium with other available Plan N companies using the same applicant information and effective date.

How Should Humana Plan N Products Be Compared?

Pennsylvania applicants may encounter more than one Humana Medicare Supplement product.

Humana Achieve Plan N and standard Humana Plan N provide the same required standardized Plan N medical benefits. Differences may include:

  • Monthly premium
  • Household discounts
  • SilverSneakers availability
  • Other noninsurance services
  • The Humana underwriting company
  • Underwriting guidelines

A lower insurance premium may be preferable for someone who does not use a gym. A standard Humana product that includes SilverSneakers may offer greater total value to someone already paying for a participating fitness center.

SilverSneakers is an additional service, not part of the standardized Plan N medical coverage. Its availability should be confirmed for the exact policy.

Is the Cheapest Plan N Company Always the Best?

Price should be one of the most important considerations because every standard Plan N provides the same required medical benefits.

However, the lowest premium should also be reviewed alongside:

  • Financial strength
  • Household-discount requirements
  • Policy and application fees
  • Rate history
  • Underwriting eligibility
  • Billing and customer service
  • Useful additional services
  • The actual amount of savings

Saving only a few dollars per month may not justify replacing an established policy. A substantial monthly difference may deserve serious consideration if the applicant qualifies for the replacement coverage.

Why Is Plan N Popular in Pennsylvania?

Plan N may provide a strong combination of comprehensive coverage and lower premiums.

Compared with Plan G, Plan N generally leaves the policyholder responsible for:

  • The annual Medicare Part B deductible
  • Up to $20 for certain office visits
  • Up to $50 for certain emergency-room visits that do not result in inpatient admission
  • Part B excess charges when they legally apply

Plan G also leaves the policyholder responsible for the Part B deductible, but generally does not impose Plan N’s office and emergency-room copayments. Plan G also covers legally permitted Part B excess charges.

Because Pennsylvania prohibits excess charges for covered care received within the state, many Pennsylvania residents focus primarily on the premium difference and Plan N copayments.

Is Plan N Better Than Plan G?

Neither plan is automatically better. The decision depends on the annual premium difference and the applicant’s preference regarding occasional copayments.

Plan N May Be a Better Fit When:

  • You want a lower monthly premium
  • You do not mind occasional office copayments
  • You rarely use the emergency room
  • The annual premium savings are substantial
  • You receive most of your care in Pennsylvania

Plan G May Be a Better Fit When:

  • You prefer fewer bills after the Part B deductible
  • You have frequent office visits
  • You want greater cost predictability
  • You regularly receive care outside Pennsylvania
  • The premium difference between Plan G and Plan N is small

Read our complete Plan G versus Plan N comparison.

How Much Does Plan N Cost in Pennsylvania?

There is no single statewide Plan N premium.

The rate can be affected by:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • ZIP code
  • Tobacco status
  • Household discount eligibility
  • Insurance company
  • Pricing method
  • Requested effective date

Published premiums should be treated as examples—not guaranteed rates. A current personalized quote is required to determine the actual premium.

Residents of the local area can also review our Bucks County Plan N cost guide.

Can You Change Plan N Companies Later?

You can apply to change Medicare Supplement companies, but medical underwriting may apply outside a protected enrollment period.

During the six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, applicants can generally purchase any Medicare Supplement policy sold in their state without being denied because of preexisting health conditions. Guaranteed-issue rights may also apply in certain situations.

When medical underwriting applies, the new company may review:

  • Health conditions
  • Prescription history
  • Recent hospitalizations
  • Pending procedures
  • Medical equipment use
  • Other health information

Never cancel an existing Medicare Supplement policy while a replacement application is still pending.

Wait until the new company has approved the application, confirmed the premium and effective date, and issued the replacement policy.

How Can an Independent Medicare Broker Help?

An independent Medicare broker can compare several Plan N companies instead of representing only one insurer.

The DeAngelis Agency can help evaluate:

  • Current Plan N premiums
  • Household discounts
  • Financial strength
  • Policy and application fees
  • Underwriting requirements
  • Plan G alternatives
  • Fitness and wellness services
  • The potential savings from changing companies

The objective is to identify the company offering the most appropriate combination of premium, financial strength, underwriting eligibility and overall value for that applicant.

The Bottom Line

The best Medicare Supplement Plan N company in Pennsylvania depends on the applicant and the rates available when the application is submitted.

Chubb, Humana, Mutual of Omaha, HealthSpring, UnitedHealthcare, Highmark, Aetna-affiliated companies and other insurers may warrant consideration when available.

No company should be permanently ranked first. Compare current premiums, discounts, financial strength, underwriting requirements, additional services and total value using the applicant’s actual information.
