Is Chubb the Same as INA? Insurance Company of North America, commonly called INA, is a Chubb company and may be the insurance company that legally issues your Chubb Medicare Supplement policy.

This can be confusing because you may see the Chubb name while researching coverage, but find Insurance Company of North America on an application, policy document, premium notice, or identification card.

In practical terms, Chubb is the recognizable brand, while INA may be the legal insurance company responsible for issuing and administering the policy. Seeing the INA name does not mean you enrolled in the wrong Medicare Supplement plan.

Is Chubb the Same as INA?

Chubb and INA are closely connected, but the names serve slightly different purposes.

Chubb is the parent brand under which numerous insurance companies operate. Insurance Company of North America is one of Chubb’s insurance subsidiaries and has its own legal corporate identity.

For Medicare Supplement customers, that generally means:

  • The coverage may be marketed using the Chubb name.
  • The application may identify Insurance Company of North America.
  • The policy may be legally issued by INA.
  • Customer communications may reference Chubb, INA, or both names.
  • Your Medicare Supplement benefits are determined by the plan letter you selected.

This type of arrangement is common in the insurance industry. Large insurance organizations frequently own several separately licensed insurance companies that issue policies under a better-known parent brand.

Why Does My Chubb Medicare Supplement Policy Say INA?

Your policy says Insurance Company of North America because INA may be the legal insurance company issuing the Medicare Supplement coverage.

Insurance policies are contracts. Therefore, the policy documents must identify the specific licensed insurance company assuming responsibility for the coverage.

Chubb may be the name you recognize from advertising or when comparing companies, but INA may be the name shown on the actual contract.

You could see Insurance Company of North America on:

  • Your Medicare Supplement application
  • Your policy identification card
  • Premium notices
  • Automatic payment information
  • Policy correspondence
  • Rate-increase notices
  • Customer-service documents

Seeing the INA name on any of these materials is generally consistent with having a Chubb Medicare Supplement policy.

Who Is Insurance Company of North America?

Insurance Company of North America has a long insurance history. INA was founded in Philadelphia in 1792 and is now part of Chubb.

That history can make the company names particularly confusing. INA was once associated with Cigna’s property and casualty operations before becoming part of ACE. ACE later acquired Chubb and adopted the Chubb name.

Today, Medicare Supplement shoppers may encounter INA as an insurance company within the Chubb organization. An INA Medicare Supplement policy should not be confused with a current Cigna or HealthSpring Medicare policy.

The insurance company shown on your current policy documents is the most reliable way to identify who legally issued your coverage.

Does the INA Name Change My Medicare Supplement Benefits?

No. The appearance of the INA name does not change the standardized benefits provided by your Medicare Supplement plan.

Medicare Supplement benefits are standardized by plan letter. For example, a Chubb Medicare Supplement Plan G issued by INA provides the same basic Medicare benefits as Plan G issued by another insurance company.

The same principle applies to Plan N. The standardized medical benefits do not change simply because the policy documents identify INA as the issuing company.

Differences between Medicare Supplement companies usually involve:

  • Monthly premiums
  • Household discounts
  • Underwriting guidelines
  • Customer service
  • Rate-increase history
  • Administrative procedures
  • Company pricing strategies

The Chubb and INA names explain the corporate and legal relationship behind the policy. They do not create a different version of Plan G or Plan N.

Should I Compare the Policy Under Chubb or INA?

When shopping for coverage, you will generally hear the plan described as a Chubb Medicare Supplement. However, your quote, application, or policy paperwork may list Insurance Company of North America.

An independent Medicare broker should recognize both names and explain which insurance company will issue the policy before you apply.

When comparing the plan with other Medicare Supplement companies, review:

  • The exact monthly premium
  • The Medicare Supplement plan letter
  • Available household discounts
  • The issuing insurance company
  • The effective date
  • Underwriting requirements
  • Available payment methods
  • The company’s rate history

The important thing is making sure you understand what you are purchasing and which company will appear on your policy.

Is an INA Medicare Supplement Policy Legitimate?

Yes. Insurance Company of North America is an established insurance company within the Chubb organization.

The presence of INA on the paperwork is not, by itself, a warning sign. It identifies the legal insurance company issuing the coverage.

Before enrolling in any Medicare Supplement plan, you should still confirm:

  • The insurance company’s full legal name
  • The quoted premium
  • The plan letter
  • The effective date
  • Any household discount
  • Whether medical underwriting applies
  • How premiums will be paid

These checks are important regardless of whether you are considering Chubb, INA, Aetna, Mutual of Omaha, Humana, HealthSpring, or another Medicare Supplement company.

Does INA Offer Plan G and Plan N Through Chubb?

Plan availability can vary by state and eligibility, but Chubb Medicare Supplement options issued by INA may include Plan G and Plan N.

Plan G offers comprehensive coverage for many of the expenses not paid by Original Medicare. After Medicare pays its portion of an approved claim, Plan G generally covers most remaining Medicare-approved expenses except the annual Medicare Part B deductible.

Plan N can have a lower monthly premium but includes certain cost-sharing provisions. These can include office visit copays, emergency room copays in some situations, and exposure to Medicare Part B excess charges where they are permitted.

Pennsylvania prohibits healthcare providers from charging Medicare Part B excess charges. This removes one potential Plan N expense for Pennsylvania residents.

The right choice depends on the available premiums, your budget, and how you prefer to balance monthly cost against potential out-of-pocket expenses.

Can a Medicare Advisor Compare Chubb and INA Rates?

Yes. An independent Medicare broker can recognize the connection between Chubb and INA and compare the available premiums with other Medicare Supplement companies.

This is helpful because the lowest-priced company can vary according to:

  • Age
  • ZIP code
  • Tobacco status
  • Gender where permitted
  • Household discount eligibility
  • Plan selection
  • Enrollment date

A broker can also confirm the issuing company so you are not surprised when INA appears on the application or policy documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chubb the same as Insurance Company of North America?

Insurance Company of North America is a Chubb subsidiary. Chubb is the parent brand, while INA may be the legal insurance company issuing the Medicare Supplement policy.

Why is INA listed instead of Chubb on my policy?

INA may be listed because it is the licensed insurance company responsible for issuing the coverage. Chubb may still be the brand used to market and identify the plan.

Did I receive the wrong policy if my paperwork says INA?

Not necessarily. If you applied for Chubb Medicare Supplement coverage, seeing Insurance Company of North America on the paperwork may be completely normal. Compare the plan letter, premium, effective date, and applicant information with what you selected.

Is INA still part of Cigna?

No. INA is now part of Chubb. Its historical connection to Cigna does not make a current INA policy a Cigna or HealthSpring Medicare Supplement policy.

Are Chubb Medicare Supplement benefits different when INA issues the policy?

No. Medicare Supplement benefits are standardized by plan letter. INA being the issuing company does not alter the standardized benefits of the selected plan.

Who should I contact if I have questions about my INA policy?

Use the customer-service information printed on your policy or identification card. Your Medicare broker may also help you identify the correct service department.
