Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company approved by Medicare.
Medicare Advantage plans combine your Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (medical insurance) into one plan. Many plans also include prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, hearing benefits, and other extras.
How Does Medicare Advantage Work?
When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan:
- You still remain enrolled in Medicare
- Medicare pays the private insurance company to manage your coverage
- The insurance company administers your healthcare benefits
Most Medicare Advantage plans operate with:
- Provider networks
- Copays
- Prior authorization requirements
- Annual out-of-pocket maximums
What Does a Medicare Advantage Plan Cover?
Most Medicare Advantage plans include:
- Hospital coverage
- Doctor visits
- Outpatient care
- Preventive services
- Emergency coverage
- Prescription drug coverage (in many cases)
Some plans may also offer:
- Dental benefits
- Vision coverage
- Hearing aids
- Gym memberships
- Transportation assistance
- Over-the-counter allowances
Benefits can vary significantly by plan and county.
Types of Medicare Advantage Plans
There are several different types of Medicare Advantage plans.
HMO Plans
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans generally require:
- Using doctors within the network
- Referrals for specialists
These plans may have lower costs but less flexibility.
PPO Plans
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans usually offer:
- More flexibility
- Ability to see out-of-network providers in some situations
- No referral requirements in many cases
PPO plans often have higher premiums or out-of-pocket costs than HMOs.
Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare
Original Medicare allows you to:
- Visit nearly any doctor nationwide that accepts Medicare
- Avoid provider networks
- Use Medicare Supplement plans
Medicare Advantage plans may:
- Lower upfront monthly costs
- Include extra benefits
- Require network usage and prior approvals
The right choice depends on your:
- Budget
- Health conditions
- Doctor preferences
- Travel habits
- Comfort level with managed care
Are Medicare Advantage Plans Free?
Some Medicare Advantage plans advertise $0 monthly premiums.
However, that does not mean healthcare is free.
You still may have:
- Copays
- Coinsurance
- Deductibles
- Prescription drug costs
- Maximum out-of-pocket exposure
It’s important to understand the total potential costs, not just the premium.
Can You Switch Medicare Advantage Plans Later?
Yes.
Most people can review and change Medicare Advantage plans during the Annual Enrollment Period each year, typically from October 15 through December 7.
However, switching from Medicare Advantage back to a Medicare Supplement plan later may require medical underwriting in many states.
Is Medicare Advantage Better Than Medicare Supplement?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
Some people prefer Medicare Advantage because:
- Lower monthly premiums
- Extra benefits
- Prescription coverage included
Others prefer Medicare Supplement plans because:
- Nationwide doctor access
- Fewer restrictions
- More predictable coverage
- Less prior authorization
Understanding the tradeoffs is important before choosing a plan.
