Medicare Supplement Plan G
Medicare Supplement Plan G is one of the most popular Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans available today. It works alongside Original Medicare to help reduce out-of-pocket medical costs and provide more predictable coverage.
Many people turning 65 choose Plan G because it offers strong coverage, nationwide doctor access, and very few unexpected medical bills.
How Does Plan G Work?
Original Medicare consists of:
While Medicare covers many healthcare expenses, it does not pay 100% of your medical costs. Medicare Supplement Plan G helps cover many of the remaining expenses that Medicare leaves behind.
Plan G helps pay for:
- Medicare Part A hospital deductible
- Hospital coinsurance
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- Part B coinsurance
- Excess charges under Medicare Part B
- Foreign travel emergency coverage (limited)
What Does Plan G Not Cover?
The main expense not covered by Plan G is the Medicare Part B deductible.
Once you pay the annual Part B deductible, Plan G generally covers nearly all remaining Medicare-approved expenses for the rest of the year.
Why Is Plan G So Popular?
Many people choose Plan G because it offers:
- Predictable medical costs
- Freedom to see any doctor nationwide that accepts Medicare
- No referrals required
- Strong coverage for hospital and outpatient services
- Protection from Medicare excess charges
Plan G is especially popular with people who travel, spend time in multiple states, or simply want broader access to doctors and specialists.
Can You See Any Doctor With Plan G?
Yes. One of the biggest advantages of Plan G is flexibility.
As long as a doctor or hospital accepts Medicare, Plan G can generally be used nationwide.
There are:
- No provider networks
- No referrals required
- No managed care restrictions
This is one reason many people compare Plan G favorably against some Medicare Advantage plans.
Does Plan G Include Prescription Drug Coverage?
No. Medicare Supplement Plan G does not include prescription drug coverage.
Most people enroll in a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan for medications.
Is Plan G Better Than Plan N?
Both Plan G and Plan N are popular Medicare Supplement plans.
Plan G generally provides more comprehensive coverage and protects against Medicare Part B excess charges. Plan N may offer lower monthly premiums but can include copays and does not cover excess charges.
The best option depends on:
- Your budget
- Doctor usage
- Travel habits
- Comfort level with out-of-pocket costs
When Can You Enroll in Plan G?
The best time to enroll in Plan G is typically during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period.
During this window:
- You generally cannot be denied coverage
- Health questions usually do not apply
- You may have access to the best plan options
Outside of this enrollment period, medical underwriting may be required in many cases.
Medicare Supplement Plan G offers a great amount of benefits for its beneficiaries. They include:
- Inpatient hospital coinsurance and hospital costs up to 365 days after original Medicare benefits.
- Hospice care coinsurance and co-payment.
- Part A deductible.
- Part B coinsurance and co-payment.
- Medicare Part B excess charges.
- First three pints of blood for an approved medical procedure (annually).
- Coinsurance coverage used for nursing facility care.
- Foreign travel emergency coverage (80% up to plan limits).
The only benefit from Plan F that is not included is the Part B deductible.
