What happened to Cigna Medicare Supplement plans? Cigna’s Medicare business was purchased by Health Care Service Corporation, commonly called HCSC, and the Medicare business now operates under the HealthSpring name.

HCSC completed its acquisition of Cigna’s Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, Medicare Part D, supplemental-benefits, and CareAllies businesses on March 19, 2025. The transition to the HealthSpring brand became fully visible for the 2026 coverage year.

For most existing Medicare Supplement policyholders, this was an ownership and branding transition—not a cancellation of their coverage.

What Happened to Cigna Medicare Supplement Plans in 2026?

The Cigna name is being replaced by HealthSpring for the Medicare business HCSC acquired.

The basic timeline is:

  • HCSC agreed to purchase Cigna’s Medicare-related businesses.
  • The acquisition was completed in March 2025.
  • HCSC introduced HealthSpring as its national Medicare brand.
  • HealthSpring began offering Medicare products for the 2026 coverage year.
  • Existing Cigna Medicare customers began receiving HealthSpring identification cards, communications, account information, and branding.

HealthSpring now publicly markets Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D, and Medicare Supplement coverage under its own name.

Did Cigna Stop Offering Medicare Supplement Plans?

The Cigna-branded Medicare Supplement business was sold to HCSC and transitioned to HealthSpring.

That is different from saying the Medicare Supplement policies simply disappeared.

HealthSpring currently offers Medicare Supplement policies, subject to state availability and the insurance company issuing the particular policy. HealthSpring’s Medicare Supplement policies may be issued by companies including:

  • American Retirement Life Insurance Company
  • HealthSpring Insurance Company
  • HealthSpring National Health Insurance Company
  • Loyal American Life Insurance Company
  • Medco Containment Life Insurance Company

The issuing company can vary by state and product.

Is HealthSpring the Same as Cigna Medicare?

HealthSpring is the successor brand for the Medicare business formerly operated by Cigna, but HealthSpring is not currently owned by The Cigna Group.

The clearest explanation is:

  • Cigna previously owned and operated the Medicare business.
  • HCSC purchased the Medicare business.
  • HCSC now operates it under the HealthSpring name.
  • The Cigna Medicare name is being phased out.
  • The rest of The Cigna Group was not purchased as part of this transaction.

HealthSpring describes itself as formerly Cigna Medicare and now backed by HCSC.

Was My Cigna Medicare Supplement Policy Cancelled?

The transition to HealthSpring did not automatically cancel existing Cigna Medicare Supplement policies.

When the acquisition closed, HCSC stated that coverage would continue unchanged and that the transaction was not expected to disrupt service for Medicare customers.

Medicare Supplement policies are also generally guaranteed renewable. Once you purchase a standardized Medigap policy, you can normally keep it as long as you pay the premiums and comply with the policy terms.

An insurance company can generally terminate a standardized Medicare Supplement policy only in limited circumstances, including:

  • The premium is not paid.
  • Materially inaccurate information was provided on the application.
  • The insurance company becomes insolvent or goes out of business.

A change in the company’s ownership or marketing name does not, by itself, cancel a guaranteed-renewable Medicare Supplement policy.

Did My Plan G or Plan N Benefits Change?

The required medical benefits of a standardized Medicare Supplement plan are determined by the plan letter.

For example:

  • A Plan G continues to provide the standardized benefits of Plan G.
  • A Plan N continues to provide the standardized benefits of Plan N.
  • A Plan F continues to provide the applicable Plan F benefits for someone eligible to keep it.

Changing the brand from Cigna to HealthSpring does not turn Plan G into Plan N or eliminate the standardized medical benefits required by the policy.

Administrative details can change, including:

  • The company name
  • The website
  • The member portal
  • Identification cards
  • Customer-service telephone numbers
  • Premium-payment instructions
  • Mailing addresses
  • Noninsurance services

Read every notice you receive, but do not assume that a new logo or identification card means you were enrolled in a different Medicare Supplement plan.

Why Does My Policy Still Show the Cigna Name?

Insurance-company transitions do not always occur everywhere at the same time.

You may still see the Cigna name on older:

  • Policy documents
  • Bank drafts
  • Premium notices
  • Identification cards
  • Applications
  • Claim records
  • Correspondence
  • State-approved policy forms

Your policy may also be issued by a legal insurance company whose name is different from the HealthSpring marketing brand.

The most important information is the legal issuing company shown on the policy—not merely the brand displayed in an advertisement.

Do not cancel a policy because some documents say Cigna while newer communications say HealthSpring. Contact the number on your current identification card or premium notice when you need confirmation.

Do I Need a New HealthSpring Identification Card?

You may receive a new identification card or updated member materials as part of the transition.

When you receive a new card:

  • Verify your name and policy number.
  • Confirm the customer-service number.
  • Check whether the premium-payment address changed.
  • Replace the old card in your wallet when instructed.
  • Keep the old card temporarily with your records.
  • Confirm that automatic payments will continue.

HealthSpring provides members with online access to coverage, premium payments, identification cards, claims, and policy information through its member resources.

A new card does not necessarily mean that you purchased a new policy or that your standardized benefits changed.

Do I Need to Change My Automatic Premium Payment?

Do not assume your bank draft will automatically stop or continue without checking.

Review letters from HealthSpring for instructions involving:

  • Automatic bank withdrawals
  • Credit-card payments
  • Online accounts
  • Payment addresses
  • Premium amounts
  • Due dates

Check your bank statement after the next scheduled payment.

If the payment does not appear, contact the insurance company immediately. A missed premium can eventually place a Medicare Supplement policy at risk of lapsing.

Do not send duplicate payments unless the company instructs you to do so.

Will My Doctors Accept HealthSpring Medicare Supplement?

A standard Medicare Supplement policy works with Original Medicare.

You can generally use any doctor or hospital nationwide that accepts Medicare. There is not a separate HealthSpring Medicare Supplement provider network that your doctor must join.

HealthSpring also describes its Medicare Supplement coverage as having no provider networks and allowing members to choose doctors or hospitals that accept Medicare.

This is different from HealthSpring Medicare Advantage coverage, which may use an HMO or PPO provider network.

When speaking with a medical office, make it clear that you have:

  • Original Medicare as your primary coverage
  • A Medicare Supplement policy as your secondary coverage

Do not ask only whether the office accepts “HealthSpring,” because the employee may mistakenly think you are asking about a HealthSpring Medicare Advantage network.

Will My Cigna Medicare Supplement Claims Still Be Paid?

Your claims should continue to be processed according to the terms of the active Medicare Supplement policy.

With most Medicare Supplement policies:

  1. Original Medicare processes the covered claim first.
  2. Medicare sends the claim information to the Medicare Supplement company.
  3. The Medicare Supplement policy pays its share according to the plan benefits.
  4. You are responsible for any amount not covered by Medicare or the policy.

Medicare explains that Medigap coverage works after Original Medicare pays its share of approved covered expenses.

Keep copies of any notices you receive about new payer names, addresses, identification cards, or account numbers.

Will My Medicare Supplement Premium Change?

The transition to HealthSpring does not guarantee that your premium will remain the same.

Medicare Supplement premiums can increase because of:

  • Age-based pricing
  • Medical inflation
  • Claims experience
  • Geographic pricing
  • Companywide rate adjustments
  • Household-discount changes
  • The pricing method used by the policy

A rate increase does not necessarily mean that the standardized benefits changed.

Review the actual dollar amount of any increase. A modest increase may still leave the policy competitively priced. A substantial increase may justify comparing other Medicare Supplement companies.

Should I Keep My HealthSpring Medicare Supplement Policy?

Do not switch solely because the Cigna name changed.

Consider keeping the policy when:

  • The premium remains competitive.
  • You are satisfied with the service.
  • The policy is processing claims correctly.
  • Changing companies would produce little savings.
  • Medical underwriting could make a replacement difficult.

Consider comparing alternatives when:

  • The premium has increased substantially.
  • Similar coverage is available at a meaningfully lower rate.
  • You may qualify medically with another company.
  • Your household discount changed.
  • You want to compare Plan G with Plan N.

The company name is only one factor. Premium, underwriting eligibility, financial strength, service, and long-term value are more important.

Can I Switch From HealthSpring to Another Medicare Supplement Company?

You can apply for coverage from another Medicare Supplement company, but approval may not be guaranteed.

Outside your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed-issue situation, the new company may require medical underwriting.

The application may include questions about:

  • Recent hospitalizations
  • Pending surgeries
  • Cancer treatment
  • Heart or circulatory conditions
  • Oxygen use
  • Mobility limitations
  • Certain prescriptions
  • Other ongoing medical conditions

Medicare states that most people do not have an automatic federal right to switch Medigap policies after their protected enrollment period unless a guaranteed-issue right applies.

Do not cancel your existing HealthSpring policy while another application is pending.

The safer order is:

  1. Compare the available premiums.
  2. Review the new company’s underwriting questions.
  3. Submit the application.
  4. Wait for written approval.
  5. Confirm the approved premium.
  6. Confirm the effective date.
  7. Cancel the old policy only after the replacement is secure.

Does the Cigna-to-HealthSpring Change Give Me Guaranteed-Issue Rights?

The ownership and branding transition does not automatically create a guaranteed-issue right.

A guaranteed-issue right generally arises from specific events, such as certain losses of coverage or qualifying Medicare Advantage changes.

Because existing Cigna Medicare Supplement coverage generally continued under HealthSpring, the name change alone does not necessarily require another Medicare Supplement company to accept you without health questions.

Do not submit a replacement application assuming underwriting will be waived.

What Should I Do With Letters From Cigna or HealthSpring?

Read each notice carefully and determine its purpose.

A letter may involve:

  • The HealthSpring branding transition
  • A new identification card
  • A new member portal
  • Premium-payment instructions
  • A premium increase
  • A policy-number change
  • A billing problem
  • A late-payment warning
  • A request for information
  • A policy termination notice

A branding letter is not the same as a cancellation notice.

Contact the company promptly when the letter includes a deadline, payment issue, termination date, or request for action.

Keep copies of important correspondence, including envelopes showing when notices were mailed.

How Can an Independent Medicare Broker Help?

An independent Medicare broker can help determine whether a Cigna or HealthSpring notice requires action.

A broker can help you:

  • Identify the legal company issuing your policy
  • Determine whether the policy remains active
  • Explain the Cigna-to-HealthSpring transition
  • Review a premium increase
  • Compare HealthSpring with other companies
  • Review Plan G and Plan N rates
  • Evaluate Medicare Supplement underwriting questions
  • Avoid cancelling existing coverage prematurely
  • Coordinate the effective date of an approved replacement

The goal should not be changing companies merely because the name changed.

The goal should be keeping appropriate coverage at a competitive price.

The Bottom Line

Cigna Medicare Supplement plans did not simply disappear.

HCSC purchased Cigna’s Medicare business in March 2025 and transitioned it to the HealthSpring brand for 2026. HealthSpring now operates the Medicare business and markets Medicare Supplement coverage under its own name.

Existing Medicare Supplement policies were not automatically cancelled because of the transition. The standardized benefits of Plan G, Plan N, or another plan letter do not change solely because the company’s ownership or brand changed.

Continue paying your premiums, review all notices, confirm your billing information, and compare alternatives only when there is a meaningful financial or coverage reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to Cigna Medicare Supplement plans?

HCSC purchased Cigna’s Medicare business in 2025. The business now operates under the HealthSpring name.

Is Cigna Medicare Supplement now HealthSpring?

Yes. HealthSpring is the new brand for the Medicare business formerly operated by Cigna.

Who owns HealthSpring?

Health Care Service Corporation owns the HealthSpring Medicare business.

Did HCSC purchase all of Cigna?

No. The transaction involved Cigna’s Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, Medicare Part D, certain supplemental-benefits, and CareAllies businesses—not the entire Cigna organization.

Was my Cigna Medicare Supplement policy cancelled?

Not simply because of the ownership and branding change. Existing coverage generally continued under HealthSpring.

Do I need to buy a new Medicare Supplement policy?

No. You do not need a new policy solely because Cigna Medicare became HealthSpring.

Did my Plan G or Plan N benefits change?

The standardized medical benefits required by your plan letter do not change merely because the company uses a new brand.

Why do some documents still say Cigna?

Older policy documents, payment records, identification cards, and state-approved forms may continue showing a Cigna or prior legal company name during the transition.

Can I use any doctor with HealthSpring Medicare Supplement?

You can generally use any doctor or hospital nationwide that accepts Medicare.

Will my premium remain the same?

Not necessarily. Medicare Supplement premiums can change even when the standardized policy benefits remain unchanged.

Can I switch to another Medicare Supplement company?

You can apply, but medical underwriting may be required unless you are within Medigap Open Enrollment or have a guaranteed-issue right.

Should I cancel HealthSpring before applying elsewhere?

No. Keep your current coverage until the replacement application has been approved and the new premium and effective date are confirmed.
