Is HealthSpring the Same as Cigna Medicare? HealthSpring is the new brand being used for the Medicare business that was previously operated under the Cigna Healthcare name.

Health Care Service Corporation, commonly called HCSC, completed its purchase of The Cigna Group’s Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, Medicare Part D, supplemental benefits, and CareAllies businesses in March 2025. HCSC then brought the Medicare business under the HealthSpring brand for 2026.

That does not mean HCSC purchased all of Cigna Healthcare. The transaction involved Cigna’s Medicare-related businesses. Cigna Healthcare continues to operate separately in other areas of health insurance.

For many Medicare beneficiaries, the most noticeable change is that the Cigna name on Medicare materials, websites, correspondence, or identification cards is being replaced by HealthSpring.

Is HealthSpring the Same as Cigna Medicare?

HealthSpring is not simply a nickname for Cigna, and it is no longer owned by The Cigna Group.

The clearest way to explain the relationship is:

  • Cigna previously operated the Medicare business
  • HCSC purchased that Medicare business
  • HCSC is now operating it under the HealthSpring name
  • HealthSpring is the current Medicare brand
  • Cigna Healthcare remains a separate company for its other insurance businesses

HealthSpring itself describes the company as formerly Cigna Medicare and now backed by HCSC. Its provider information also states that the Cigna Medicare name is going away and that the business is now owned by HCSC.

Why Did Cigna Medicare Become HealthSpring?

The name changed because ownership of the Medicare business changed.

HCSC completed the acquisition on March 19, 2025. The purchase included:

  • Medicare Advantage plans
  • Medicare Supplement insurance
  • Medicare Part D prescription drug plans
  • Certain supplemental health benefits
  • CareAllies

HCSC later announced that it would use HealthSpring as its national Medicare brand. HCSC had also acquired the rights to the HealthSpring name as part of the transaction.

The HealthSpring name may sound familiar to longtime Medicare consumers. Cigna had previously used the Cigna-HealthSpring name after acquiring the original HealthSpring company years earlier. The name has now returned under HCSC’s ownership.

Is HealthSpring Still Part of Cigna?

No. HealthSpring’s Medicare business is now part of Health Care Service Corporation.

HCSC is a separate organization from The Cigna Group. The Cigna Medicare business changed ownership, and HealthSpring is the brand HCSC is now using for that business.

Someone may still see the Cigna name on older:

  • Policy documents
  • Insurance cards
  • Premium notices
  • Bank drafts
  • Online accounts
  • Correspondence
  • State insurance filings

That does not necessarily mean the information is incorrect. A large insurance-company transition can take time, and legal insurance-company names may not change in every state at exactly the same time.

HealthSpring states that, in some states, HealthSpring Insurance Company may also still be known as Cigna Insurance Company, and HealthSpring National Health Insurance Company may still be known as Cigna National Health Insurance Company while state name-change approvals are being completed.

Did My Cigna Medicare Supplement Policy Get Cancelled?

The change from Cigna Medicare to HealthSpring does not, by itself, mean that your Medicare Supplement policy was cancelled.

Medicare Supplement policies are generally guaranteed renewable. Standardized Medigap policies renew each year even when the policyholder develops health problems, provided the required premiums are paid and the policy remains in good standing.

You should not purchase a new Medicare Supplement policy simply because the company name changed.

Review any letter you receive to determine whether it is:

  • A branding notice
  • A legal company-name notice
  • A new identification-card notice
  • A premium-change notice
  • A billing-method change
  • A policy-benefit notice
  • A cancellation or nonpayment notice

A branding letter is not the same as a cancellation letter.

Did My Medicare Supplement Benefits Change?

The required medical benefits of a standardized Medicare Supplement plan are determined by the plan letter.

For example, a Plan G policy must provide the standardized Plan G benefits. A Plan N policy must provide the standardized Plan N benefits.

Medicare states that policies with the same letter provide the same basic benefits regardless of the insurance company selling them.

The change from Cigna to HealthSpring does not turn a Plan G into Plan N or remove the standardized medical benefits required by the policy.

However, other parts of the policy relationship may change over time, including:

  • The company name
  • The customer-service website
  • Member identification cards
  • Billing addresses
  • Automatic-payment instructions
  • Customer-service telephone numbers
  • Premiums
  • Household discounts
  • Noninsurance services or additional benefits

Read every notice carefully rather than assuming that it is only advertising.

Will My Cigna Medicare Supplement Premium Stay the Same?

The change to HealthSpring does not guarantee that your premium will remain the same.

Medicare Supplement companies can request premium increases under applicable state rules. Premiums may change because of factors such as:

  • Age-based pricing
  • Claims experience
  • Medical inflation
  • Geographic pricing
  • Companywide rate adjustments
  • Household-discount changes

A premium increase does not necessarily mean that your standardized Plan G or Plan N benefits changed.

It means you should compare the new premium with current rates from other Medicare Supplement companies before deciding whether to stay or apply elsewhere.

Do not cancel an existing policy until a replacement policy has been approved and you know its effective date.

Do I Need to Take Any Action?

Many policyholders will not need to make a coverage change solely because the Cigna Medicare name became HealthSpring.

You should still review all communications and confirm:

  • Whether your policy number changed
  • Whether you will receive a new insurance card
  • Whether the customer-service number changed
  • Whether your online account is moving
  • Whether your automatic premium payment will continue
  • Whether the premium amount changed
  • Whether you need to update a payment address

HealthSpring now provides separate contact information for Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D, Medicare Supplement, and supplemental insurance members. Use the number shown on your current policy documents or identification card when possible.

What If I Have a HealthSpring Medicare Advantage Plan?

Medicare Advantage plans work differently from Medicare Supplement policies.

A Medicare Advantage plan has:

  • A provider network
  • Copays and coinsurance
  • An annual maximum out-of-pocket limit
  • Plan-specific medical benefits
  • A defined service area
  • Rules that may change from year to year

HealthSpring Medicare Advantage members should review the plan’s Annual Notice of Change each fall. That notice explains changes to costs, benefits, provider rules, and coverage for the coming year.

Do not assume that a Medicare Advantage plan will remain exactly the same merely because the ownership transition was described as a branding change.

What If I Have a HealthSpring Part D Prescription Drug Plan?

HealthSpring also operates Medicare Part D prescription drug plans acquired from Cigna.

Part D members should review the plan’s:

  • Annual Notice of Change
  • Formulary
  • Pharmacy network
  • Drug tiers
  • Premium
  • Deductible
  • Copays and coinsurance

Prescription drug coverage can change each year. A medication may move to a different tier, require prior authorization, or no longer appear on the same formulary.

The HealthSpring name may be new, but the normal Medicare Part D review process remains important.

Will My Doctors Still Accept HealthSpring?

The answer depends on the type of Medicare coverage you have.

Medicare Supplement

A standard Medicare Supplement policy works with Original Medicare. You can generally use any healthcare provider nationwide who accepts Medicare.

The provider does not need to belong to a separate HealthSpring Medicare Supplement network.

Medicare Advantage

A HealthSpring Medicare Advantage plan may have an HMO or PPO provider network. Members should use HealthSpring’s current provider directory and verify participation directly with the provider before receiving nonemergency care.

Do not confuse the provider rules for Medicare Advantage with the provider freedom available through Original Medicare and a standard Medicare Supplement policy.

Should I Keep My HealthSpring Medicare Supplement Policy?

The name change alone is not a reason to leave.

The more useful question is whether the policy remains competitively priced and appropriate for your needs.

Review:

  • Your current monthly premium
  • Recent rate increases
  • The plan letter you have
  • Current premiums from other companies
  • Available household discounts
  • Underwriting requirements
  • Whether you have a guaranteed-issue right
  • The risk of changing coverage

HealthSpring may be competitive for one person and overpriced for another. Medicare Supplement rates vary by age, ZIP code, tobacco status, discount eligibility, plan letter, and application date.

Can I Change From HealthSpring to Another Medicare Supplement Company?

You can apply to another Medicare Supplement company, but approval is not always guaranteed.

Outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed-issue situation, the new company may require medical underwriting.

Medical underwriting may include questions about:

  • Recent hospitalizations
  • Pending surgeries
  • Chronic medical conditions
  • Cancer treatment
  • Heart conditions
  • Oxygen use
  • Mobility limitations
  • Prescription medications

Do not cancel your HealthSpring policy while an application with another company is still pending.

Wait until:

  1. The new company approves the application.
  2. You receive the final premium.
  3. You confirm the effective date.
  4. You decide that the replacement is financially worthwhile.

How Can an Independent Medicare Broker Help?

An independent Medicare broker can help determine whether the Cigna-to-HealthSpring transition requires action or whether the policy should simply be left in place.

A broker can help you:

  • Identify the type of HealthSpring plan you have
  • Review correspondence from the company
  • Confirm whether the notice involves branding, billing, or benefits
  • Compare current Medicare Supplement premiums
  • Review Plan G and Plan N options
  • Determine whether underwriting may apply
  • Avoid cancelling existing coverage prematurely
  • Compare HealthSpring with other Medicare Supplement companies

The goal should not be changing companies merely because the name changed. The goal should be keeping appropriate coverage at a competitive price.

The Bottom Line

HealthSpring is the new Medicare brand for the business HCSC purchased from The Cigna Group.

It is accurate to say that Cigna Medicare became HealthSpring, but HealthSpring is now owned by HCSC—not Cigna.

For Medicare Supplement policyholders, the name change does not automatically cancel the policy or change the standardized benefits of the plan letter.

You should still review your premium, billing information, identification card, and company correspondence. Medicare Advantage and Part D members should also review their annual plan documents because benefits, costs, networks, and formularies can change each year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HealthSpring the same as Cigna Medicare?

HealthSpring is the new brand for the Medicare business formerly operated by Cigna Healthcare. HCSC purchased that business in 2025 and now operates it under the HealthSpring name.

Who owns HealthSpring Medicare?

Health Care Service Corporation owns the HealthSpring Medicare business.

Did HCSC purchase all of Cigna?

No. HCSC purchased Cigna’s Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, Medicare Part D, certain supplemental benefits, and CareAllies businesses. It did not purchase all of Cigna Healthcare.

Do I need a new Medicare Supplement policy?

Not solely because the company name changed. Review your policy notices, premium, and billing information before taking any action.

Did my Cigna Medicare Supplement benefits change?

The standardized benefits required by your Medicare Supplement plan letter do not change simply because the company is now using the HealthSpring name.

Why does my policy still show Cigna?

Legal insurance-company names and policy documents may transition at different times while state approvals and administrative changes are completed.

Will my premium stay the same?

Not necessarily. Medicare Supplement premiums can change even when the standardized policy benefits remain the same.

Does HealthSpring offer Medicare Advantage?

Yes. HealthSpring offers Medicare Advantage plans under the Medicare business HCSC acquired from Cigna.

Does HealthSpring offer Medicare Part D?

Yes. HealthSpring also offers Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.

Can I switch from HealthSpring to another Medicare Supplement company?

You can apply, but medical underwriting may apply unless you are within Medigap Open Enrollment or have a guaranteed-issue right.
